That's why we make our own mat wash using a family recipe, like your grandma's spaghetti sauce, that was created by Juliana, our beloved, former studio manager and charismatic yoga teacher who guarded this recipe with her life. Get ready! We're about to spill the beans on how we make Juliana's Top Secret Mat Wash and All Purpose Cleaner. Its easy to make, super safe to use, and now--for the first time ever--its yours for the taking!

Follow along with mat wash mixologist Jonathan, our Takoma studio manager, as he creates a fresh batch.

Step 1. Assemble the necessary supplies.

  • 1 gallon white vinegar
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Grapefruit essential oil
  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Peppermint essential oil
  • Medicine dropper or pipette
  • 2 additional EMPTY gallon containers
  • Spray bottle
  • Permanent marker

Step 2. Prepare your supplies

You'll need to do a few things to get ready. One is to label your gallon jugs and spray bottles so they say Mat Wash. Nothing's worse than mixing up your cleaning supplies.

Set things up in clean area...like your kitchen counter. Being near the sink is ideal because you'll need to add water at the end of the mixing process.

Step 3. Chanel you inner bartender.

The mixing part is pretty straight forward:
- Divide the white vinegar among the three gallon containers (so basically, pour two-thirds into the two additional gallon jugs, keeping the remaining third in the original bottle).
- Use the pipette or medicine dropper to add 2 milliliters (ml) of lavender essential oil to each of the three jugs.
- Add 1 milliliter (ml) each of the three remaining essential oils to each jug.
- Fill the rest of the gallon jugs with tap water.
- Put the tops on the jugs and give them a good shake.

Voila! You've made mat wash. Dispense this concoction into spray bottles and store them under your kitchen sink, in the bathroom, next to your yoga mat, or wherever you need an environmentally friendly and very effective cleaning solution.

Besides your yoga mat, Juliana's Top Secret Mat Wash and All Purpose Cleaner can be used on windows and mirrors, counter tops, wood or tile floors, outdoor patio furniture, etc. Of course its important to test it on a small, inconspicuous area if you're worried about how the vinegar will react on the surface you're cleaning.

Let us know how it goes!
