Why Kids Yoga Camp?

Kids Yoga camp at Yoga Heights is so much fun! Yoga and Mindfulness for kids give children the chance to explore their inner and outer worlds using poses, meditation, breathing, self-regulation, and relaxation techniques.

According to Harvard Medical School research, yoga and mindfulness have been shown to improve both physical and mental health in school-age children (ages 6 to 12). In addition to improving balance, strength, endurance, and aerobic capacity, yoga and mindfulness have been proven to improve focus, memory, self-esteem, and reduce anxiety and stress in children. By exploring the foundations of yoga in camp, children will be set up to continue a yoga and meditation practice on their own.

Our teacher, Bretton, a full-time children’s yoga, mindfulness, and art teacher working at schools in the DC area with over a decade of teaching experience and two decades of yoga practice, created this unique, integrative program that allows children to learn lifelong lessons, skills and techniques while expressing themselves creatively. Yoga, mindfulness, and art are natural complements in that all three emphasize process, exploration, and discovery. Children are natural yogis and artists, and this is the perfect age to start learning about yoga and meditation! No prior experience is needed to enjoy the classes and projects we have planned this summer.

In a small class setting, students will enjoy interacting with their peers and teachers as we embark on creative journeys each week. Each week has a different theme, which will influence the poses, the yoga and meditation stories, the games played, and the art projects. The overarching theme that extends over all three weeks, as well as throughout Bretton’s teaching approach, is kindness, and how to approach ourselves and others from a place of deeply rooted compassion. It is Bretton’s belief that when we learn to be truly kind to ourselves, that kindness will radiate out to those we encounter, and through a ripple effect touch those outside our immediate circles, ultimately making our families, communities, and larger world softer and more peaceful.

Please let us know if you have any questions at all about camp! We would love to see your child there; the link to sign up can be found here!
