Meet Beth Roessner, a.k.a.The Rungry Health Coach. Beth is the guiding force behind our Yoga Heights Run Group, and a pretty inspirational lady.  She is deeply passionate about nurturing all aspects of health. But she’s also super cool about balance - as in sometimes the right food for the soul is a burger, sweet potato fries and dairy-free ice cream.  She will be contributing to the YH Blog with health and exercise tips and tricks based on her expertise as a health and running coach!  Here’s a little interview to help you get to know her:YH: Beth, can you tell us a bit about your own wellness routine or habits?  B: Fueling is incredibly important to me, and I strive to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and high-quality proteins. (I'm primarily vegetarian--no cheese, some fish.) Most meals and snacks are cooked at home, and it took a lot of practice to get me there. I'm a firm believer in everyday movement, and try to incorporate some form of movement everyday--a lifting session at the gym, yoga, a morning run, an evening walk. I also try to practice a lot of compassion toward myself. After years of having a tumultuous relationship with my body, I've stripped myself of the "all or nothing" mentality. I now give myself grace when I eat a bit too much ice cream, skip a workout or have an extra beer. I go for progress over perfection. Those three things are my most important habits.YH: What brought you, a serious runner and health coach, into Yoga Heights, and what made you keep coming back?B: I originally started going to Yoga Heights via ClassPass, and tried several studios around DC. But there was just something about Yoga Heights. I was immediately drawn to the studio and it quickly became my favorite place to practice. It has a very welcoming and contemporary feel, and I love the diversity in both the class attendants and teachers. The teachers (and staff) are incredibly kind. And although I'm not the best yogi, I never feel left behind or singled out because of my abilities. YH: What are some of the benefits of yoga for runners?B: A runner's body takes a constant beating--especially the knees and hips. Runners also have a really bad habit of staying true to their sport; we're incredibly reluctant to try anything else. (We love running that much!) But yoga has an amazing ability to slow a runner down. It's a different challenge and can feel incredibly therapeutic on sore muscles. And for runners who struggle with tight knees and hips, it's a great way to work through those problems. YH: Flip it, what are some key benefits of running for yogis?B: Great question! Yogis are some of the strongest people I've ever met. They're able to contort their bodies in different ways, balance on just one finger and can perform some incredible acts of strength. But, like runners, they're true to their sport. Cross training is incredibly beneficial for all athletes. For yogis, running can improve their cardiovascular system and challenge them in new ways.YH: Can you tell us more about the YH Run Club?  Who can participate?B: The YH Run Club was the brainchild of Jess and myself to grow and challenge the YH community. The group strives to make running fun and approachable for everyone--regardless of running ability. Unlike other running groups, this group takes a run/walk approach, meaning periods of running are met with periods of walking recovery. This breaks the run down into smaller, more manageable portions, and makes it far less intimidating. Although the group is focused more to those just learning how to run, or getting back into the sport, anyone can attend! We frequently chat and laugh, and the workouts are always different. Before we know it, the run is done!Join Beth & the YH Run Club every Sunday morning at 8am for a low-key, fun run.
